CRS4 and ICT in Sardinia

Information Society Technologies aim to increase innovation and competitiveness in [European] businesses and industry and to contribute to greater benefits for all [European] citizens. The focus is on the future generation of technologies in which computers and networks will be integrated into the everyday environment, rendering accessible a multitude of services and applications through easy-to-use human interfaces. This vision of "ambient intelligence" places the user, the individual, at the centre of future developments for an inclusive knowledge based society for all.

The above mentioned aim to increase innovation and competitiveness in businesses and industry and to contribute to greater benefits for all citizens, was the basis of the foundation of CRS4 at the end of the 80's and its fundamental role as computing and network excellence centre in the Scientific and Technological Park of Sardinia.

For Sardinia, the impulse to convert itself to the new economy came from a local-government research centre called CRS4, headed by Carlo Rubbia, the Italian Nobel-prize-winning physicist. [...] The CRS4 centre opened Italy’s first website back in 1993. It also worked on a project to help the local newspaper, L’Unione Sarda, to become the first in Europe to go online, in February 1994.

Information and Communications Technology is currently one of the most dynamic and innovative fields in Sardinia. It has considerable resources to activate intersectorial activity and its development has a strong influence on all other productive activities.

One of the strengths of the government program of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia is the promotion of the island as a logistics platform of excellence for scientific and technological research and for the use of the new technologies, particularly those in the field of Information Society.

Indeed, the emergence and development of important entrepreneurial enterprises on the island in the field of the network economy, in particular Tiscali, has contributed to the creation of ideal environmental conditions for the development of research and business activities linked to the new technologies.

By the end of 1990, the digital research centre CRS4 was up and running, and it rapidly established itself as an international centre of excellence for innovative digital technologies. Cross fertilizations between the centre and the main media outfit in Sardinia (L’Unione Sarda) produced a chain of events that gave life to a few remarkable start-ups:
  • The first web page in Italy; www.crs4.it (1993)
  • The first newspaper on line in Italy: l’Unione Sarda on line (1994);
  • A pioneering national Internet Provider, Video on Line (1994-96), from the same local newsprint company
  • The first national provider of free internet services: Tiscali (1998)
